A Humboldt Park resident, Rachel Morris, has launched a fundraiser to provide swimsuits and swim diapers for children who lack proper swimwear at the neighborhood pool.
Morris, who has lived in Humboldt Park for seven years, started the fundraiser after noticing more children swimming at the neighborhood pool in street clothes or underwear because their families couldn’t afford proper swimwear.
She said she worries that lacking appropriate attire can harm kids’ confidence and is quietly offering the swimsuits to any child who needs one, no questions asked.
The GoFundMe had raised $275 of its $900 goal as of Thursday, but Morris said she doesn’t plan to wait for it to be fully funded and expects to buy about 50 swimsuits to begin distributing them at the pool next week.
Morris plans to provide swimwear to families for the rest of the outdoor pool season, which lasts until Sept. 7, and will save leftover items to distribute next summer or donate them to a local organization like the YMCA.
