Howard University Reinstates Students

Nikiyah Clark, a 17-year-old student, was initially unenrolled from Howard University due to a missed tuition fee deadline. However, after pleading with administrators, she was reinstated. Clark is one of over 500 incoming first-year students who were unenrolled, with about 200 having their enrollment restored.

Unenrollment Debacle

The university’s decision to unenroll students has raised questions about the school’s administrative processes. Interim President Wayne A. I. Frederick stated that the university followed its payment policy, but some students claim they were not properly informed about the deadline. The incident has sparked concerns about the university’s handling of student enrollment and financial aid.

Howard University is one of the most prestigious historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the country, with a 6-year graduation rate of 70% and a retention rate of 90%. The university has a long history of producing successful alumni, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and actor Chadwick Boseman.

Student Reactions

Some students who were unenrolled and then reinstated have expressed relief and gratitude, but also frustration and disappointment with the university’s handling of the situation. Zy’Aira Blackmon, an 18-year-old student from Grand Rapids, Michigan, had her heart set on attending Howard, but after being unenrolled and then reinstated, she decided to attend Western Michigan University instead.
