Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton announced a $1 million donation from Howard Guggenheim, a 46‑year Boca Raton resident and longtime supporter of the university’s athletic and academic programs.
Philanthropy rooted in community and faith
Guggenheim, a Holocaust survivor, said his gift reflects a deep belief in giving back to the community that has supported his family for decades. “After 46 years in Boca Raton, I believe deeply in giving back to the community that has given me so much and in helping young people find a path to a successful future,” he explained.
The donation will be allocated to four key areas: FAU athletics, the College of Business, the College of Medicine’s White Coats program, and the Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust and Jewish Studies Building. Each of these initiatives aligns with Guggenheim’s personal history and his desire to create lasting opportunities for students.
Impact on FAU athletics
Guggenheim’s relationship with FAU athletics dates back to the program’s early days. He helped bring legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger to the university and was the program’s first founding donor. He later contributed to the construction of the football stadium and has mentored countless student‑athletes on the practice field. FAU President Adam Hasner praised the generosity, noting that Guggenheim’s “decades‑long commitment has helped make Florida Atlantic the institution it is today, and now he is helping define its future by advancing excellence in athletics, business and medicine, and by standing firmly against antisemitism.”
Supporting business and medicine
Beyond sports, the gift funds scholarships for College of Business students and bolsters the College of Medicine’s White Coats program, which welcomes new medical students and emphasizes professional development. Blake Davis, vice president for institutional advancement and CEO of the FAU Foundation, said the investment “creates meaningful opportunities for students, student athletes and coaches, and ensures his impact will be felt across the university and region for years to come.”
Preserving history through Holocaust studies
The contribution to the Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust and Jewish Studies Building reflects Guggenheim’s personal commitment to remembering the past. The building will support research, education and public programming that honors the memory of Holocaust victims and educates future generations about the dangers of hatred.
Broader community involvement
Guggenheim’s philanthropy extends beyond FAU. He also supports Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Boca Helping Hands, the Dwight Stephenson Foundation and the Festival of the Arts BOCA. FAU athletics director Josh McCowan called him “the original founding donor that brought football to paradise nearly three decades ago,” adding that his legacy will continue to shape the university’s future.
With this gift, Howard Guggenheim exemplifies the spirit of local stewardship, reinforcing the bond between FAU and the Boca Raton community while providing students with resources to excel academically, athletically and morally.
