How to Safely Exercise While Wearing Invisalign Aligners

Balancing a busy schedule of work, family and fitness can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re committed to wearing clear aligners like Invisalign for 20 to 22 hours a day. The good news is that the majority of exercise routines are compatible with your trays, provided you know when to take extra precautions.

When Aligners Can Stay On During Exercise

Dental professionals say clear aligners are designed to be worn during nearly every type of physical activity. “Whether you enjoy running, weightlifting, yoga, or team sports, your aligners can usually stay in place,” explains Dr. Laura Lawrence, director of dental services at Signature Health, Inc. in Painesville, Ohio. She adds that maintaining an active lifestyle supports overall health, which in turn helps keep bone and gum tissues healthy during orthodontic treatment.

Activities That May Require Removal

Contact sports and high‑impact activities present a higher risk of impact to the mouth. Dr. Michael Sherman, an orthodontist based in Toronto and secretary‑treasurer of the American Association of Orthodontists, advises athletes in ice hockey, American football, lacrosse, field hockey, boxing, mixed martial arts and other combat sports to wear a properly fitted sports mouthguard. In those cases, the aligner should be removed before inserting the mouthguard.

Weightlifters who tend to clench their teeth may also benefit from a mouthguard to protect the aligner from excessive wear or strain. “Clear aligners are designed to move teeth, not to protect against sports‑related injuries,” Dr. Sherman notes.

What to Drink While Working Out

Hydration is essential, but the type of liquid matters. Water is safe to sip with aligners in place, though Dr. Lawrence points out that bottled water can be slightly more acidic than tap or alkaline water, making the latter a better choice for the oral environment. Sports drinks, energy drinks, soda, juice and protein shakes should be avoided while the aligner is in the mouth because sugars and acids can become trapped between the tray and teeth, increasing the risk of cavities, enamel erosion or staining.

Practical Tips for Active Aligners Users

  • Carry your aligner case during high‑intensity or contact activities to protect the tray and prevent loss in a gym bag.
  • Include a small oral‑care kit—brush, floss and toothpaste—in your workout bag so you can clean your teeth before reinserting the aligner.
  • Consult your orthodontist if you regularly participate in contact sports; they can advise on an appropriate wear schedule and mouthguard selection.

Dr. Sherman emphasizes that consistency matters more than the amount of exercise. “The most important factor is not how much you exercise, it’s whether you can consistently meet the required wear time. Patients who do that can enjoy all the benefits of an active lifestyle while achieving a healthier, more attractive smile,” he says.

Key Takeaways

Most cardio and strength workouts can be performed with Invisalign in place. Remove the trays for contact sports, heavy weightlifting when a mouthguard is needed, and avoid sugary or acidic beverages during wear. By planning ahead and keeping oral‑care supplies handy, you can stay fit without compromising your orthodontic progress.
