How far apart American siblings live and what distance means for family care

Recent research compiled by PeopleWin, using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, Census migration figures and surveys from AARP and Pew, paints a clear picture of how far adult siblings live from one another in the United States. On average, sibling pairs who no longer share a household reside about 157.5 miles apart—slightly closer than the 181.3 miles that typically separate parents from their adult children.

Where siblings live

Although the national average suggests a sizable distance, the data reveal that most siblings remain relatively close. About 11.5% still share a household, 13.2% live in the same census tract, and 34.5% reside in the same county. Adding the 23.8% who live in the same state but a different county, more than eight in ten sibling pairs stay within a single state line.

Only the remaining slice of families, who cross state and regional borders, lift the national average upward. Regional patterns differ: West Coast moves, especially from California to Texas, tend to cover greater distances, while East Coast and Southern relocations often involve neighboring states, keeping families geographically tighter.

Drivers of sibling distance

Researchers identified three primary factors influencing where siblings end up:

  • Family ties: Seventy‑four percent of adults who never left their hometown cite family connections as the main reason.
  • Education: College graduates are far more likely to move multiple times compared with those holding only a high‑school diploma.
  • Economic opportunity: Job prospects and regional labor markets push many to relocate, especially from high‑cost states like California.

Impact on caregiving

When parents age, sibling proximity becomes a practical concern. A 2025 survey by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving found that 40% of family caregivers live in the same house as the person they care for, and another 35% live within 20 minutes. Only 12% reside one to two hours away or farther, meaning the sibling closest to an aging parent often shoulders the bulk of caregiving duties.

Caregivers who live more than an hour away report higher physical and financial strain, citing travel time, missed work and logistical challenges. Coordination with health professionals is also harder; only 58% describe it as easy, a drop of seven points since 2015.

Emotional closeness vs. miles

Despite the geographic spread, distance does not automatically erode sibling bonds. Multiple studies cited in the report show that emotional closeness and a sense of responsibility are stronger predictors of a supportive relationship than miles alone. Families that plan ahead—dividing caregiving duties, holding candid conversations about expectations, and using digital tools to stay connected—tend to maintain stronger ties regardless of distance.

In short, while the United States’ vast geography and varied labor markets shape where siblings live, intentional communication and shared responsibility can bridge the gap, ensuring families remain united when it matters most.
