San Francisco’s cultural scene is bustling this September. Residents can enjoy free‑admission Saturdays at the Legion of Honor and de Young museums, explore new exhibitions at the Asian Art Museum and SFMOMA, and attend a series of city‑government arts committee meetings.
Featured exhibitions
Legion of Honor – The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy opens Sept. 20. The show presents 150 sculptures and jewelry pieces, drawing strong word‑of‑mouth praise. Free Saturdays are available to Bay Area county residents.
de Young Museum – Highlights include A Gallery of Their Own: Women Artists from the Carr and Goldblum Gift, a focus on paper works by women, and Treasures of the Pharaohs, praised for its visual splendor. Free Saturdays are also offered.
Asian Art Museum – New shows include FX Harsono: Writing in the Rain (Sept. 7), a video installation on memory and identity, and Ha Chong‑Hyun: Retrospective (Sept. 25). Ongoing programs feature Kim Minwook: On Carving, Bending, and Binding Wood (through March 29) and a public‑art series, “This Asian American Life,” highlighting Chinatown’s families.
SFMOMA – Jacob Hashimoto’s massive Giant Arc dominates the first floor, while Graciela Iturbide: Between Two Worlds runs through Nov. 29. The museum also presents Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal (until Sept. 13) and a bronze sculpture by Rose B. Simpson on the fourth‑floor terrace, now extended to Feb. 7, 2027.
Special events
The Tenderloin Museum will host its 11th Annual Gala, “A Decade Plus One,” on Sept. 23 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Green Room at the San Francisco War Memorial, marking the first gala since a June fire forced venue repairs.
MoAD’s Nexus program celebrates Black Art Week from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, and SFMOMA partners with the Rubin Museum for RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me on Oct. 3.
City arts meetings
Residents can join the Arts Commission meeting on Sept. 11 (Friday, 2 p.m.) at the War Memorial Veterans Building, Room 125. The Visual Arts Committee meets Sept. 16, the Civic Design Review Committee on Sept. 21, the Executive Committee on Sept. 23, and the Film Commission on Sept. 28. All sessions are streamed via SFGovTV.
Community support
The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts has suspended operations, leaving a gap in children’s programming. City Hall has pledged action, and donations are welcomed. SOMArts also faces a budget shortfall and is seeking community contributions.
