Houston voters approve Proposition A and local businesses expand across the city

Houston residents demonstrated strong support for public‑safety reform on Nov. 3, voting 71.8% in favor of Proposition A. The charter amendment directs police to treat misdemeanor marijuana possession as the lowest enforcement priority and eliminates no‑knock warrants throughout the city. Of the 588,685 votes cast, 420,641 were “yes” votes and 168,044 were “no” votes.

Election outcomes across Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties

Key races in the region also concluded. In Harris County, Democratic incumbents Gene Wu, Christina Morales, Lauren Ashley Simmons, Jolanda Jones and Ann Johnson retained their Texas House seats. Statewide, Democrats Gina Hinojosa and Vikki Goodwin secured victories for governor and lieutenant governor, and James Talarico is projected to defeat Republican Ken Paxton in his race.

Din Tai Fung to open first Texas location in the Galleria

Renowned Taiwanese restaurant chain Din Tai Fung announced plans to convert six existing spaces in the Galleria mall—including the former Nobu venue—into a single 17,000‑square‑foot restaurant. The project, estimated at $1 million for modifications, will feature the chain’s signature handmade Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings along with a full menu of dumplings, buns, noodle soups, fried rice, desserts and signature cocktails. Construction is slated to begin Feb. 1 and should be completed within four to five months.

Houston Police overtime spending

Houston Police Department overtime costs have reached $6.7 million as of Sept. 30, representing over 31% of the department’s $21.2 million fiscal‑year‑2026‑27 overtime budget. Finance Director Melissa Dubowski noted that additional reimbursements from the Houston Airport System and METRO have already offset roughly $1.08 million, or about 32%, of the overtime expense.

Boomtown Coffee opens third location in Memorial Park

Local roaster Boomtown Coffee Roasters launched a new shop in Memorial Park, its third outlet since 2011. The café offers pastries, breakfast tacos and specialty drinks such as the Toddy Mocha, CRUD cold brew, Shakarato espresso blend and Sea Turtle latte. Founder Charlie McIntyre of Different Hospitality highlighted the park’s diverse foot traffic as a key draw, saying the new space will bring “new life” to an existing venue while serving quality coffee to the community.

What this means for Houstonians

Proposition A reflects a growing community desire for sensible drug‑policy enforcement and greater protection of private homes from aggressive police tactics. At the same time, the city’s expanding culinary scene and the police department’s budget transparency illustrate a vibrant, resilient Houston that balances public‑safety priorities with economic growth.
