Houston ISD Deputy Superintendent Kristen Hole Resigns to Join Family Out of State

Houston Independent School District (HISD) confirmed on September 17 that Deputy Superintendent Kristen Hole will resign from her post to move out of Texas and reunite with her family. The district released a statement noting that Hole’s family had already relocated, and she had been splitting her time between her new home and Houston to oversee the rollout of new programs that began with the 2026‑27 school year.

District leadership acknowledges Hole’s service

HISD Superintendent Mike Miles said in the release, “Kristen has given a great deal to this District, both professionally and personally. We understand and respect her decision that the time has come to be with her family. On behalf of HISD, I thank her for her service and wish Kristen and her family all the best in this next chapter.” The statement highlighted Hole’s role in guiding the implementation of curriculum updates, technology initiatives, and community‑engagement efforts that launched at the start of the new school year.

Impact on ongoing initiatives

Hole’s departure comes as HISD continues to roll out several district‑wide programs aimed at improving student achievement and expanding parental involvement. While the district has not yet named a replacement, officials indicated that the transition will be managed by existing senior staff to maintain continuity. The board’s next meeting, scheduled for early October, is expected to address the search for a new deputy superintendent.

Community response

Parents and teachers expressed appreciation for Hole’s leadership, noting her hands‑on approach to addressing equity gaps and supporting school‑wide professional development. “Kristen was always present in our schools, listening to concerns and helping us find solutions,” said a longtime HISD teacher who asked to remain anonymous. The district’s communications office emphasized that the search for a successor will prioritize candidates with experience in large, diverse urban districts.

Next steps for HISD

In the interim, Deputy Superintendent for Operations and Finance will assume additional responsibilities related to program oversight. HISD’s human resources department has opened an internal posting for the vacant position, inviting qualified district employees to apply. The board will review applications and conduct interviews in the coming weeks, with a goal of appointing a new deputy superintendent before the start of the 2027‑28 academic year.

HISD remains committed to its strategic plan, which includes expanding early‑learning opportunities, enhancing STEM curricula, and strengthening partnerships with local businesses and faith‑based organizations. The district’s leadership reiterated that the ongoing initiatives will continue unabated, reflecting the board’s dedication to providing a high‑quality education for all students in the Houston community.
