House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan announced that the committee is considering a criminal referral of former Special Counsel Jack Smith for allegedly lying to Congress about his investigation into President Donald Trump.
Alleged Misconduct
According to Jordan, newly disclosed information shows that Smith’s team obtained and reviewed congressional text messages, contradicting Smith’s testimony that investigators sought only telephone toll records.
Smith had previously testified that his office did not obtain the contents of communications, stating that toll records were sought for historical telephone routing information. However, Jordan argued that this testimony was false, as Smith’s team had indeed obtained and reviewed text messages involving 44 current and former lawmakers.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) also called for Smith’s prosecution, stating that he had lied under oath and violated the law and the Constitution.
The Justice Department has confirmed that it is investigating the matter.
