Cheyenne’s downtown area has welcomed a new addition: a $5 million train car project. The display, located on 15th Street near the old Depot and behind the home of the Cheyenne Gunslingers, features a caboose and three railcars that are now available for public viewing at no cost.
Restoration Efforts
The train restoration in Cheyenne, Wyoming, is led by the Union Pacific Steam Shop and the city’s 15th Street Railcar Experience, focusing on preserving both operating steam giants and static historical artifacts. A local restoration company, Vintage Rail Restorations, was used for this project. The company, managed by Michael Pannell, operates out of repurposed Cold War-era nuclear missile silos in southeast Wyoming and handles full and partial restorations of historic railroad rolling stock.
The process of moving the railcars to their new location involved careful planning and execution. Once the car arrived at the depot, it had to be removed from the wheels that transported it and then placed on metal wheels. This process, which included jacking up the car and swapping out the wheelsets, was carried out with precision and care.
