Historic Philadelphia actors bring colonial stories to life for 250th celebrations

Philadelphia’s Historic Philadelphia, Inc. has stepped up its programming for the nation’s 250th birthday, immersing visitors in colonial history through first‑person interpretations. The troupe, now about 60 strong, adds new characters and expands opportunities for interaction from Memorial Day through Labor Day in Old City.

Patriotic performances and quirky appearances

Actors like Carol Spacht, who portrays Betsy Ross, have taken the role beyond the historic house—appearing at a NASCAR race, meeting Punxsutawney Phil, and even competing in a karaoke contest with Eagles tackle Jordan Mailata. These high‑profile moments draw crowds and social‑media buzz while reinforcing a sense of patriotic duty to tell America’s founding story where it happened.

Authenticity and inclusion

Artistic director Johanna Dunphy emphasizes that the troupe’s mission is to represent under‑represented Philadelphians—women, people of color, and everyday laborers—who helped build the city and nation. Physical likeness is less critical than the ability to convey a character’s story, allowing flexibility in casting figures like Deborah Sampson, the Revolutionary‑era woman who disguised herself as a man.

Costume authenticity is a priority; garments are made from natural fibers with no polyester, and actors keep period‑accurate tools, such as sewing scissors tied to a ribbon, to demonstrate historic crafts.

Community impact and education

Beyond performances, many actors hold other jobs or teach at children’s theater camps, reinforcing the troupe’s role as educators. Long‑time cast members, such as Keith Henley portraying abolitionist James Forten, stress the importance of presenting the full story of America’s past, especially as federal decisions threaten to reshape historic exhibits.

Historic Philadelphia’s dedication to diverse storytelling offers locals and tourists a vivid, family‑friendly way to connect with the nation’s heritage during this historic milestone.
