Historic Basila Frocks Building Transforms

The historic Basila Frocks building, a landmark structure built in 1929, has been transformed into a vibrant hub for small businesses and art on San Antonio’s West Side. After facing the threat of demolition, the building has been beautifully restored and is now home to a collection of local artisans and vendors selling handmade items, including flower crowns, jewelry, and custom keychains.

A New Era for Basila Frocks

Janie Villarreal-McClinchey, owner of K-Retro Arts and community engagement specialist at Dream On Group, expressed her excitement about the building’s new chapter. ‘They were gonna demolish the building. And the fact that it was saved and it’s been converted into what it is now, a beautiful space,’ she said. The building’s transformation has not only preserved its historic charm but also provided a platform for local talent to thrive.

The month of April and March proved to be especially strong for the artisans inside Basila Frocks, with Fiesta shopping and San Antonio Spurs playoff excitement driving sales. The Spurs’ postseason run also presented a new challenge and opportunity for local crafters, who created Spurs merchandise by hand. Villarreal-McClinchey invites everyone to visit the West Side and experience the rich art, culture, and community it has to offer.
