SHREVEPORT, La. — The Hispanic Heritage Association of Northwest Louisiana celebrated the achievements of local Latino students and leaders on October 10 at Bally’s Casino and Hotel in downtown Shreveport. The Latino Leadership Awards and Scholarships event brought together community members, elected officials, and business professionals to highlight the contributions of the Hispanic community in the region.
Scholarships and honors
Seventeen high school students received scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $2,000, totaling more than $20,000 in financial support. In addition, ten Latino leaders were recognized for their service to the community, receiving the association’s Leadership Awards.
Growth of a grassroots organization
Briant Garcia, co‑founder of the Hispanic Heritage Association of Northwest Louisiana, said the organization has grown from a small group of friends into a nonprofit that now awards more than $50,000 in scholarships each year. “What started as a group of friends wanting to recognize the Latino community has developed into a nonprofit organization,” Garcia explained.
Garcia noted that the association’s mission is to “educate, inform and help the Latino community move forward,” a goal reflected in the scholarships that enable students to pursue higher education and career training.
Community support
Local elected officials, including Shreveport City Council members and representatives from the Caddo Parish School Board, attended the ceremony and praised the association’s impact. Business leaders from the region also contributed to the scholarship fund, underscoring the partnership between the private sector and nonprofit groups in fostering educational opportunity.
Attendees highlighted the importance of recognizing Latino contributions to the cultural and economic fabric of Northwest Louisiana. Several award recipients expressed gratitude, noting that the scholarships will help them attend college and give back to their families and neighborhoods.
Looking ahead
The Hispanic Heritage Association plans to expand its outreach efforts, aiming to increase the number of scholarships and broaden its mentorship programs. Garcia emphasized that continued community involvement and donor support are essential to sustaining the organization’s growth.
As the event concluded, participants celebrated the achievements of the scholars and leaders, reinforcing the association’s role as a catalyst for educational advancement and community cohesion in Northwest Louisiana.
