Former Dallas Independent School District (ISD) head Michael Hinojosa has announced his candidacy for the Dallas mayoral office. Hinojosa, 70, made the announcement outside Dallas City Hall, stating that he is well-positioned to become the city’s next mayor.
Hinojosa’s Vision for Dallas
Hinojosa emphasized the need for strong, proven, and transparent leadership in the city. He highlighted his experience in building broad coalitions with employees and the business community during his tenure as Dallas ISD head, which led to academic gains and community support for new buildings and programs.
Matthew Wilson, a political science expert at Southern Methodist University (SMU), expects a crowded field in the upcoming election, given the major challenges facing Dallas, including the revitalization of downtown and the departure of major businesses.
A New Era for Dallas
Hinojosa, a Dallas native, would be the city’s first Hispanic mayor if elected. He plans to start his campaign in earnest, meeting with residents in each of the city’s 14 council districts every week until election day.
