Hilton and Becerra Lead in California Gubernatorial Race After Primary

In the recent California gubernatorial primary, Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra have emerged as the frontrunners, setting the stage for a competitive general election in November. Hilton, a Republican and former adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron, garnered 27.8% of the vote. Becerra, a Democrat who served as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, received 25.4%.

Hilton’s Business and Government Experience

Hilton, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has faced criticism for his past role as a Fox News Channel host. However, he emphasizes his extensive experience in both business and government as key qualifications for the governorship. Hilton has a diverse business background, having started companies in various sectors, including consulting, restaurants, and technology. He also highlights his role in government reform as a senior adviser to the UK Prime Minister, which he believes will be invaluable in addressing California’s challenges.

Becerra’s Political Journey

Becerra, who has not granted interviews to The Center Square, has seen a surge in support following the withdrawal of U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell from the race. Becerra’s campaign focuses on grassroots support from nurses, teachers, firefighters, and union workers, positioning himself as a candidate for the people. Despite facing criticism in debates and accusations of accepting oil company donations, no evidence of such contributions has been found. Becerra’s campaign has raised over $7.4 million, with significant support from political action committees.

Challenges Ahead

Both candidates acknowledge the pressing issues of housing and affordability in California. They have proposed plans to increase housing availability and support residents in managing living costs. As the race progresses, Hilton and Becerra will continue to address these and other critical issues facing Californians.
