Hiker narrowly escapes grizzly mother and cubs in British Columbia’s Kootenay National Park

Keith Kerr was enjoying a solo hike in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, when he stumbled upon a family of grizzly bears. The adult female, clearly protective of her two cubs, reacted aggressively as Kerr approached their territory.

Encounter details

According to an interview with CTV News, Kerr heard “the gnarliest sound” he had ever experienced – a low, guttural growl that signaled the mother bear’s presence. “Mama bear comes around, and she’s in my spot before I get there,” he recalled. The bear moved quickly, positioning herself directly in Kerr’s path.

Over the next few minutes the female grizzly issued four bluff charges, each time stopping short of a full attack. Kerr remained still, avoiding sudden movements that could have provoked a more serious response. “I literally think this is going to be it for me,” he said, describing the terror of the moment.

Safety lessons

Video of the encounter, posted online, shows the bear’s powerful stance and the hiker’s cautious retreat. Commenters on the video emphasized the importance of staying alert in wilderness areas. One viewer wrote, “If a bear is coming at me, the last thing on my mind is taking pictures,” while another joked, “A real journalist would have reached out to the bear to get their side of the story.”

Experts agree that hikers should keep their heads on a swivel, make noise to avoid surprising wildlife, and carry bear deterrents such as bear spray. Understanding bear behavior – especially that mothers will fiercely protect their young – can mean the difference between a close call and a tragic outcome.

Why the story matters

Canada’s national parks are home to thriving wildlife populations, and encounters like Kerr’s remind outdoor enthusiasts of the responsibility to respect animal habitats. While the incident was frightening, Kerr emerged unharmed, underscoring the effectiveness of staying calm and giving wildlife space.

For those planning trips to Kootenay or other Canadian backcountry areas, local authorities recommend reviewing safety guidelines, traveling with a companion when possible, and informing someone of your itinerary before heading out.
