Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo was pulled over on June 14 after making an improper left turn. The responding officer noticed that Calvo’s vehicle had police lights, which raised concerns.
Police Lights on a Non-Police Vehicle
The officer asked Calvo if the vehicle was a police car or personal, and Calvo responded that he was an elected official. However, the officer emphasized that activating police lights on a non-police vehicle is a criminal offense.
Calvo was issued two tickets for an improper left turn and prohibited lights on his vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to both citations, and the case remains pending.
In a statement, Calvo explained that one citation relates to a traffic maneuver, and the second concerns equipment installed on a vehicle owned by the Hialeah Police Department. The vehicle was retrofitted before Calvo took office and was assigned to him.
