Heinz History Center to host launch of Aaron Gorson art book Sept. 22

The Senator John Heinz History Center announced that it will host the official book launch for Fire in the Night Sky: The Steel Mill Paintings of Aaron Gorson on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. The event will take place in the museum’s event space in downtown Pittsburgh and will include a reading by author Maxwell King, a preview of an upcoming exhibition, and a book‑signing.

About Aaron Gorson and his art

Aaron Gorson was born in Lithuania and arrived in Philadelphia in 1890 at age 18. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before continuing his training in Paris. After his European studies, Gorson settled in Pittsburgh, where he devoted his career to capturing the city’s steel‑mill landscape. His nighttime canvases portray the glow of molten steel and the towering furnaces that defined the region’s industrial era, a period that lasted into the early 1920s.

The new book and exhibition

“Fire in the Night Sky” is the first comprehensive biography of Gorson and brings together 39 of his most striking paintings. The volume places his work within the broader story of Pittsburgh’s steel industry, illustrating how the technological achievements of the era reshaped the city and the nation. History Center president and CEO Andy Masich will join King at the launch to preview the museum’s forthcoming exhibition on Gorson’s life and artwork, scheduled to open on Nov. 14.

Following the program, Maxwell King will sign copies of his book for attendees. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event, and additional information can be found on the History Center’s website.

Why the event matters to the community

The launch highlights Pittsburgh’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of the steel industry that built the region. By celebrating Gorson’s work, the History Center reinforces the city’s commitment to preserving and sharing its industrial past with new generations. The event also offers a family‑friendly evening of art, history, and local pride, aligning with the community’s values of heritage and education.

For anyone interested in Pittsburgh’s history, industrial art, or simply looking for an engaging cultural outing, the book launch provides a unique opportunity to connect with the city’s past while supporting the local museum.

More details, including parking information and ticket availability, are posted on the Heinz History Center’s events page at heinzhistorycenter.org/events.
