City Theatre launches ‘In Clay’ musical celebrating overlooked jazz‑age ceramic artist

Pittsburgh’s City Theatre is kicking off its 2026‑27 season with a locally‑produced solo musical, “In Clay.” The production tells the true story of Marie‑Berthe Cazin, an early‑20th‑century ceramic artist whose work was largely forgotten despite her talent and perseverance.

From Washington to Pittsburgh

After a sold‑out run at Washington, D.C.’s Signature Theater, “In Clay” arrives in Pittsburgh for performances from September 19 through October 11. The show previously premiered in London’s VAULT Festival in January 2023 and enjoyed an all‑star concert at the Other Palace that August. It has also completed a second Chinese‑language production in Shanghai, underscoring its growing international appeal.

A Parisian jazz backdrop

The musical is set to an upbeat Parisian jazz score that mirrors the era’s vibrant cultural scene. Audiences follow Cazin in her Paris apartment in 1938, on the eve of a visit from an estranged childhood friend who has become an acclaimed painter. Through flashbacks, the narrative traces her journey from a gifted protégé discovering pottery to watching her husband rise to fame by claiming her work as his own, all while navigating the upheaval of World War I.

Local artists bring the set to life

Approximately 50 ceramic pieces displayed on stage have been crafted by Pittsburgh artists through a partnership with the Union Project, a local ceramic center. This collaboration not only adds authenticity to the production but also offers patrons the chance to purchase a piece of the show after the final performance, supporting local creators.

Performance details

“In Clay” runs Wednesday through Sunday, with both evening shows and matinees available. The full schedule can be found on City Theatre’s website. For tickets or additional information, callers can reach the box office at 412‑431‑CITY (2489) or visit CityTheatreCompany.org.

Why the story matters

By spotlighting an overlooked artist, the production aligns with Pittsburgh’s tradition of honoring cultural heritage and encouraging artistic expression. It also highlights the city’s thriving arts community, demonstrating how local talent can contribute to nationally recognized works.
