Harvard University has taken in more money from foreign countries, including China, than any other university in the country. Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., is calling for an investigation into China’s funding of American universities, citing concerns over national security and the influence of communist China on higher education. Cotton noted that since the Education Department’s reporting portal was relaunched in January, data has shown that federally funded universities accepted over $6.8 billion from communist China, including over $300 million from sanctioned entities.

Harvard, in particular, has received over $630 million from Chinese entities, including roughly $418,000 from organizations participating in foreign talent programs and nearly $420,000 from entities allegedly supporting unauthorized military advancements. Cotton has encouraged Education Secretary Linda McMahon to open an investigation into the financial ties between American universities and communist China.
