The City of Hartselle, Alabama, is proactively planning for its future growth through a newly developed Strategic Plan. During a recent meeting, city officials and community leaders gathered to discuss the plan, which is based on feedback from a survey sent to around 400 local leaders. The plan highlights key priorities such as improving infrastructure, supporting downtown development, and ensuring public safety.
Community-Driven Planning
Mayor Missy Evans emphasized the importance of aligning the city’s growth with the needs and priorities of its citizens. ‘We took our Comprehensive Plan that was developed a couple of years ago and broke that down because what we wanted to hear is what’s important to our citizens,’ Evans stated. With new council members and a new mayor, the city is keen on setting clear priorities as they approach budget planning for the upcoming years.
The community gathered at City Hall to review the latest draft of the Strategic Plan, which aims to guide the city’s future while preserving its small-town charm. ‘We are so uniquely poised right here off of Interstate 65 with some of the best schools in the state. We are a very attractive community,’ Evans noted. ‘We are on the cusp of some incredible growth and making sure that we manage that growth in a way that preserves our small-town charm.’
Infrastructure as a Foundation
Place 1 City Councilmember Austin Baker highlighted infrastructure as a critical focus for the city. ‘What I really see in this community is everybody looks above ground. The infrastructure that maintains the city is like the foundation of an architect plan,’ Baker explained. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the city’s foundational infrastructure, such as roads and pavements, supports future growth.
Mayor Evans expressed confidence in the direction the city is heading, noting that community feedback has affirmed the city’s current path while also providing valuable insights for adjustments. ‘It’s great to hear back from the community that we’re on the right track, but it’s also helped me tweak some of my thinking,’ she said.
The city plans to establish community task forces to achieve the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan, ensuring that Hartselle remains a vibrant and attractive place to live and work.
