Harbour Island residents advised to shelter in place after hazmat response at Port Tampa Bay

On Friday evening, Tampa Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to 1015 McCloskey Boulevard after receiving reports of a possible sulfur tank fire at Port Tampa Bay. The call came in just before 6:30 p.m., prompting a rapid response from fire companies on both Harbour Island and Davis Island.

What officials observed

Upon arrival, firefighters found no active fire at the site. However, they did notice a thin plume of light smoke and a faint sulfur smell in the vicinity. The smoke was quickly treated, and fire officials confirmed that there was no fire at the time of the investigation.

Precautionary shelter‑in‑place advisory

As an abundance of caution, the Tampa Fire Rescue department issued a shelter‑in‑place notification to residents of Harbour Island. The advisory instructed occupants to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity until the situation could be fully assessed.

What remains unknown

Authorities have not yet released details about the source of the light smoke or the duration of the shelter‑in‑place order. It is also unclear whether any injuries occurred during the initial response. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official updates from Tampa Fire Rescue and local emergency management for further information.

Community response

Local homeowners expressed appreciation for the prompt communication from fire officials, noting that the early warning helped them take immediate protective steps. “We were glad to get the notice right away so we could keep our families safe,” said one Harbour Island resident who preferred not to be named.

Next steps

The fire department will continue monitoring the area and will lift the shelter‑in‑place advisory once it determines that the environment is safe. Residents should follow any additional instructions sent via text alerts, social media, or local news outlets.

Safety reminder

Hazardous material incidents, even when they do not result in a fire, can pose health risks if chemicals are released into the air. Tampa Fire Rescue advises anyone who experiences persistent symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or irritation of the eyes or throat to seek medical attention promptly.
