A small, roughly 16-by-16-inch box was hung on a tree at Mayport’s Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, with a directive to ‘Take wax. Leave wax.’ This wax box has become a charitable gesture, an expression of communal goodwill among the local surf set.
Community Support
The box was installed by an anonymous surfer who wanted to see how the community would respond. The response has been positive, with many surfers using and contributing to the box. Michael Fitzgerald, a local contractor, has made use of the wax box and appreciates the gesture.
The wax box has occasionally been empty or contained items other than wax, such as sunscreen, trash, or goggles. However, the community has generally respected the box’s intended purpose.
City Response
Hanna Park employees have stated that the box is not technically allowed, but there are currently no plans to remove it. Victoria Albright, former manager of Hanna Park, encourages anyone interested in the wax box’s upkeep to reach out to her. Daryl Joseph, director of the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, says that the review and approval process could ensure the box remains secure and stocked with appropriate items.
