Half of Parents Track Adult Kids’ Whereabouts

A recent study by the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll found that half of parents track their adult children’s whereabouts, with one in four reporting increased anxiety as a result.

Parental Rights and Independence

The study, which surveyed 1,542 American parents, highlights the complexities of balancing parental concerns with the need for young adults to develop independence. While location tracking can provide reassurance, it can also be seen as an invasion of privacy.

According to the research, parents are more likely to track their daughters than sons, and location tracking is more common among parents of young adults aged 18-20 than those aged 21-25. The most common reason parents give for tracking is peace of mind, with many using location-sharing features to feel reassured about their child’s safety or to be prepared in case of an emergency.

However, the study also found that constant access to information can fuel anxiety, and that parents who track their child’s location may be interfering with the development of independence and personal responsibility. As digital tools continue to evolve, families may benefit from thoughtful discussions about how to balance safety, privacy, and independence.
