Haines Closes Lily Lake Trail After Resident Injured in Bear Encounter

Early Saturday morning, Aug. 29, a Haines resident walking a leashed dog along Mt. Riley Road encountered a brown bear. The animal responded defensively, striking the woman and causing serious, non‑life‑threatening injuries. She was able to limp home, call 911 and is now receiving medical care in Juneau.

Investigation and Findings

Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) biologists, an Alaska Wildlife Trooper and Haines Police Department officers returned to the scene to gather evidence. Their preliminary assessment indicates the bear acted in self‑defense rather than as a predator. Investigators found food waste dumped near the road, a likely attractant that may have drawn the bear to the area.

Bear sign—tracks, scat and rubs—was evident, although no bears were seen during the follow‑up sweep. Samples were collected for DNA analysis at the ADF&G Gene Conservation Lab in Anchorage. The lab will confirm the species, sex and possibly the individual bear involved.

Trail Closure and Safety Recommendations

In response to the incident, the Haines Borough has closed the Lily Lake Trail until further notice. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise heightened caution in bear country. The borough and ADF&G stress that proper disposal of fish carcasses, garbage, livestock feed and pet food is essential to prevent future encounters.

ADF&G recommends that anyone traveling in bear country carry a deterrent—such as bear spray or a firearm—and know how to use it. Traveling in groups, making noise to avoid surprising a bear, and keeping pets on a leash are also key safety measures.

What to Do If You Encounter a Bear

If a bear is stationary, back away slowly while keeping your eyes on the animal. If the bear begins to move toward you, stand your ground, speak calmly and prepare your deterrent. Do not run. Should the bear charge, wait until it is within effective range of your deterrent before deploying it.

For additional guidance, including videos on bear behavior and proper use of bear spray, visit the ADF&G website or call the Douglas office at 907‑465‑4265.

Community Reminder

The incident serves as a stark reminder that human actions—especially improper waste disposal—can create dangerous wildlife interactions. By securing attractants and staying prepared, Haines residents can protect both themselves and the bears that share this beautiful Alaskan landscape.
