Habitat ReStore Opens on State Street Offering Discounted DIY Supplies

The city of Santa Barbara welcomed the grand opening of a new Habitat ReStore on the corner of Gutierrez Street and State Street on Monday morning. The nonprofit retail outlet, operated by Habitat for Humanity of Santa Barbara County, offers a wide range of donated items—from kitchen sinks and light fixtures to desks, chairs and hand tools—at prices that often start at just one dollar.

During the ribbon‑cutting ceremony, city leaders and downtown business owners highlighted the store’s potential to increase foot traffic in the 400 block of State Street and to revitalize the surrounding area. “This store gives our community a place to donate quality items, shop affordably, and support the building of safe homes,” said Habitat CEO Jessica de L’Arbre.

De L’Arbre explained that the ReStore will serve three core purposes: a convenient drop‑off point for residents renovating homes or clearing out unused tools, an affordable shopping destination for DIYers and contractors, and a revenue stream that directly funds Habitat for Humanity’s local home‑building projects.

Donors have already been enthusiastic. “I was remodeling my kitchen and had a sink I no longer needed,” one resident said. “Being able to give it a second life here feels right, and I know it helps families in need.” Shoppers echoed the sentiment, noting the high quality of many items despite the low price tags.

Since its relocation from Goleta six years ago, the ReStore has been collecting donations, sorting and tagging each piece, and arranging them for display in an orderly fashion. Within minutes of opening, customers were able to purchase doors, appliances, art pieces and a variety of tools at a fraction of the cost of big‑box retailers.

The store’s presence aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Santa Barbara’s downtown economy while reinforcing the community’s commitment to charitable giving and affordable housing. By providing low‑cost building materials and household goods, the ReStore helps families stretch their budgets, supports local contractors, and generates essential funds for Habitat’s mission of building safe, decent homes for those in need.

What to Expect When Visiting

Shoppers are encouraged to arrive early, as popular items can sell quickly. The store operates with a simple checkout process, and staff are on hand to answer questions about product condition and suitability for specific projects. All purchases support Habitat’s ongoing construction of new homes throughout the county.

For those looking to donate, the ReStore accepts a wide variety of household goods, building materials and tools. Items should be clean and in usable condition. The staff will sort donations, tag them with prices and place them on the sales floor for the next wave of shoppers.

Habitat for Humanity of Santa Barbara County invites community members to both give and receive, emphasizing the shared responsibility of building stronger neighborhoods. The ReStore’s opening marks a new chapter in the organization’s effort to combine charitable service with practical, everyday savings for local families.
