Guardrail request after crash at Babe Cave Salon highlights traffic safety concerns in Mechanicsville

Mechanicsville, Md. – A vehicle driven by an alleged driver under the influence of alcohol struck the Babe Cave Salon on the 29000 block of Point Lookout Wednesday night around 11 p.m., causing the ceiling to cave in.

Incident details

Surveillance footage from the salon captured the moment the car plowed into the building. St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as 38‑year‑old Renay Harrison of Piney Point, who was cited for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Officers said Harrison failed to control the car’s speed on a highway turn, leading to the collision.

Harrison was released at the scene to obtain medical care. No injuries to salon staff or patrons were reported.

Owner’s long‑standing safety concerns

Salon owner Laura Ianiero has been advocating for a guardrail at the corner for years. “I’ve been in talks with Maryland State Highway all of 2025,” Ianiero said. “It took about a year to finally get approved, but not until 2027. With us being on the corner here, this was my biggest fear: what happened last night.”

Co‑owner Sabrina Torres echoed the sentiment, noting a similar incident occurred last year. “Guardrails or something on the turn would help everything,” she added.

Guardrail approval and timing

The request for a guardrail was recently approved by Maryland State Highway officials, but the installation is not slated to begin until 2027—too late to prevent the recent crash.

Community response and recovery

Cleanup crews began clearing debris Thursday morning, and the salon’s owners are working to repair the damage. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to raise funds for repairs and to help the business reopen as soon as possible.

The incident has sparked renewed discussion among local business owners about road safety measures in the area, which is home to numerous small enterprises. Residents and officials are urging faster implementation of traffic‑safety infrastructure to protect both businesses and motorists.
