Groveland Police Department appoints Lt. Sammy Anderson as new chief

The City of Groveland announced Thursday that Lieutenant Sammy Anderson has been selected to lead the Groveland Police Department as its new chief. Anderson, a lifelong public‑safety officer, brings 15 years of service to the department and a total of 23 years in law enforcement.

Internal promotion reflects department values

According to the city’s official social‑media release, Anderson “worked his way through the ranks, most recently serving as our Special Operations Lieutenant.” The announcement highlighted that the selection process was driven by a clear desire among officers to keep leadership within the department. Public Safety Director Kevin Carroll, who previously served as fire chief, conducted interviews with every member of the Groveland Police Department over the past several weeks.

“Chief Anderson’s career is a powerful example of what we strive for our organization to be: a place where people can grow, lead, build success in public service, and most importantly serve our community,” the city statement read.

Background of the departing chief

The appointment follows the recent departure of former Chief Shawn Ramsey. Ramsey left the department after being terminated on Aug. 25. He has filed a federal lawsuit alleging wrongful termination, claiming the action was taken for “inappropriate behavior” and “unsatisfactory performance” and that he was retaliated against after requesting medical leave and filing a workers’ compensation claim.

Community response

Local residents and business owners expressed confidence that promoting from within will maintain continuity and trust between the police and the community. “Having someone who knows the streets and the people we serve is exactly what Groveland needs,” said longtime resident Maria Torres, who has lived in the city for over a decade.

City officials emphasized that the new chief will continue to prioritize community‑oriented policing, youth outreach programs, and partnerships with local schools and faith‑based organizations. These initiatives align with Groveland’s broader goals of fostering safe neighborhoods and supporting families.

Looking ahead

Chief Anderson is expected to assume his duties immediately, with a formal swearing‑in ceremony scheduled for later this month. The department plans to hold a town‑hall meeting in September to allow residents to meet the new chief, ask questions, and discuss public‑safety priorities.

The Groveland Police Department remains committed to transparency and accountability as it navigates this leadership transition. Officials encourage community members to stay engaged through the department’s social‑media channels and upcoming public events.
