The Greene County Commission has approved a letter requesting the Springfield-Greene County Environmental Advisory Board to conduct a study on the environmental impacts of data centers. This move comes after the Springfield City Council approved a 120-day moratorium on applications for data centers.
Environmental Concerns
The commission’s letter asks the Environmental Advisory Board to specifically look at the potential environmental effects of data centers related to energy consumption, water usage, emissions, and local infrastructure. The board will also examine best practices, mitigation measures, and regulatory approaches used by peer communities.
Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon emphasized that he is not aware of any data centers under development in Greene County, except for a potential project in Springfield that could include components of a data center. Dixon noted that the county only dictates zoning in unincorporated areas.
Commissioner’s Perspective
Dixon expressed his desire to get down to the facts and have experts study the issue, rather than relying on misinformation. He also recognized the potential benefits of data centers, but emphasized the need to balance development with environmental protection.
Commissioner Rusty MacLachlan supported the letter, highlighting the importance of having a clear list of non-negotiables when dealing with data center development. MacLachlan noted that having a thorough understanding of the issue will help the county make informed decisions.
