Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder is warning families of jail detainees about scammers demanding money in exchange for a loved one’s supposed early release.
The scammers contact relatives and falsely claim a detainee is eligible for release if the family pays for an ankle monitor, Snyder said. The requested payments can range from $500 to $1,000.
Once the payment is made, the scammer disappears with the money.
Snyder said bonds and ankle monitors must be ordered through the court. Legitimate authorities will not call relatives and request payment over the phone to secure a bond or ankle monitor.
Detainees who are eligible for release will contact appropriate family members to arrange bond through a reputable bail bonding company, Snyder said.
