GREEN BAY, WI — The Green Bay Packers are at the center of a nationwide Disney‑NFL partnership that pairs each of the 32 league teams with a beloved Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars character. For the Packers, the iconic Star Wars figure Chewbacca was chosen, a nod to the team’s rugged, cold‑weather reputation and the loyal spirit of its fan base.
How the collaboration came together
The collaboration, announced as part of Disney and ESPN’s “Year of the Super Bowl,” brings together Disney Consumer Products, the NFL, Champion and Fanatics. According to Bret Healey, Director of Graphic Design for Disney Consumer Products, each pairing was inspired by the traditions and fan culture that define each franchise, matched with characters whose stories share similar traits.
“Every pairing was inspired by the qualities, traditions and fan culture that define each NFL team, as well as the shared personalities, traits and stories that connect these teams with beloved Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters,” Healey said. “The result is a collection that feels authentic to fans while celebrating the passion behind both fandoms.”
Chewbacca fits the Packers’ identity
The official release describes the match as “Loyal to the cause in the cold, snow, sleet and rain. Whether it’s Hoth or Lambeau, Chewbacca stays until the job is done.” Packers staff and fans echoed that sentiment. “I think it’s a good pickup for the Packers, good for team morale, and fun for the kids,” said Zach Ledwith, a representative of the organization.
Anne Wanty added, “It’s perfect for the Packers because they’re big and burly and they’re going to get the job done.” While many fans see the connection between the Wookiee warrior and the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field, some suggested alternative characters. Local resident Angela Blaser humorously noted, “I think Gus Gus would have been a great hit because little cheese mouse. They’re cute. And we’re a cute little town. So, good fit.”
What’s available and where to buy
The first wave of the collection was unveiled at the Disney Fan Draft during Fanatics Fest in New York City, where NFL legends helped present the matchups on stage. The line now includes tees, crewneck sweatshirts and fleece jackets for all 32 teams. Packers fans can purchase the Chewbacca‑themed items through NFLShop.com, Fanatics.com, DisneyStore.com and select retailers nationwide.
Local impact and fan response
Local retailers anticipate a boost in sales as the unique crossover appeals to both football enthusiasts and Star Wars fans. “It kind of expands the fan base and gets exposure to crowds that might not be interested in the NFL. So I totally aligned with it,” Ledwith said.
The partnership also underscores Green Bay’s reputation as a community that embraces tradition while welcoming new, family‑friendly experiences. By offering merchandise that resonates with children and longtime supporters alike, the Packers and Disney aim to strengthen community ties and celebrate the city’s enduring love of the game.
Looking ahead
As the NFL season progresses toward the Super Bowl, the Packers‑Chewbacca collection adds a fresh element to the team’s branding and merchandise strategy. Fans can expect the apparel to appear at local sports bars, fan gatherings and community events throughout the fall, reinforcing Green Bay’s identity as a city where football and family culture go hand in hand.
