Grass fire near Gracemont burns hundreds of acres, threatens homes

Firefighters across Oklahoma were busy Thursday battling several grass fires, the most significant of which erupted near Gracemont in Caddo County. The blaze originated east of County Street 2690 and north of County Road 1290, quickly moving north and east across open prairie.

According to the city manager of Anadarko, which oversees the fire district that includes Gracemont, the flames threatened structures near County Road 1270. Crews from both the Gracemont and Anadarko fire departments worked side‑by‑side to contain the fire, while aerial support from Sky 5 provided overhead observation.

“Hundreds of acres have burned,” pilot Chase Rutledge reported from the aircraft. The fire’s forward march toward a wooded area complicated suppression efforts, as denser vegetation can reignite hotspots even after the main blaze is knocked down.

The incident comes just days after a separate wildfire in nearby Anadarko destroyed four homes, underscoring the heightened risk of grass and brush fires during the hot, dry summer months in western Oklahoma.

Other grass fires reported Thursday

In Payne County, a smaller grass fire broke out near the intersection of 104th Street and Karsten Creek, consuming roughly 40 acres. Multiple agencies responded, and the fire was contained without damage to any structures, according to the Payne County emergency manager. Crews continued to monitor and extinguish lingering hotspots through the evening.

Oklahoma City also saw a grass fire on Northeast 63rd Street near Jericho. The blaze spread to a shed, destroying the building, but no injuries were reported. The Oklahoma City Fire Department confirmed the incident was fully under control by late afternoon.

Response and safety reminders

State and local fire officials emphasized the importance of public vigilance during this fire‑season peak. Residents are urged to clear vegetation away from homes, keep fire‑danger signs in mind, and report any smoke or flames promptly to 911.

As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, crews continued to mop up hotspots in the Gracemont area, working to ensure the fire does not reignite. No further injuries or fatalities have been reported across the three incidents.

Authorities will maintain a watchful eye on the affected regions, especially as weather forecasts predict continued high temperatures and low humidity, conditions that can easily reignite grass fires.
