Miela Sowah is one of two development players on the Golden State Valkyries, a new role in the WNBA this season. She estimates she’s won the pregame half-court shot contest among her teammates seven or eight times this season.
Development Player Role
Sowah is provided a one-bedroom apartment and a weekly stipend of $750; if activated for a game, she’s paid the league game-minimum of $6,136. Teams can have two development players off the roster who do not affect the salary cap. They can only play in 12 games, and must wait until 60 minutes before a game to find out if they’re actually going to play.
Sowah, who grew up in Australia and was a sharpshooting guard at Duke, signed with the Valkyries during training camp this May. She was cut following the first preseason game, before being signed back as a development player. For now, the 5-foot-10 guard says she just wants to do what she can to help the Valkyries become a championship contender.
