Global Cleveland is kicking off its annual Welcoming Week this Friday, Sept. 11, with a series of events aimed at helping immigrants and the broader community connect, learn, and build stronger ties in Greater Cleveland.
Community‑focused panels highlight immigrant contributions
The opening event, “America 250: From Newcomers to Nation Builders,” will feature a panel that brings together representatives from long‑standing immigrant groups such as the Irish and Italians alongside newer arrivals from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Panelists will discuss how immigrant communities have shaped Cleveland’s history over the past two centuries and how they continue to enrich the city today.
“We want the discussion to explore what it means to build a community, preserve a legacy that began 200 years ago, and start fresh in a new place,” said Zachary Nelson, Director of Programming for Global Cleveland. “It’s a chance for both established and newer residents to learn from each other.”
International business and investment focus
A second panel scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, will turn its attention to Cleveland’s role as a globally connected hub for business and investment. Honorary consuls from several countries will speak about sister‑city relationships, opportunities for building businesses abroad, and bringing foreign investment to the region.
Free job‑fair services for newcomers
On Monday, Sept. 14, Global Cleveland will host an International Job and Resource Fair at the Cuyahoga County Public Library’s Parma‑Snow Branch. The fair invites job‑seekers to meet local employers and learn about resources available to immigrants seeking work in and around Cleveland.
New this year, the fair will provide a complimentary professional headshot session and resume‑preparation help. Volunteers will review resumes, offer edits and recommendations, and take high‑quality photos for attendees to use in online job applications.
“A professional image online is very important,” Nelson explained. “If someone hasn’t been able to afford a headshot, this gives them a chance to present themselves confidently to potential employers.”
How to get involved
Welcoming Week runs through Saturday, Sept. 19. Residents are encouraged to attend any of the events, whether they are newcomers looking to settle in Cleveland or long‑time locals interested in supporting the city’s diverse fabric. For more details, visit Global Cleveland’s website.
