Glass, Steel, and a View Worth Every Step: Climbing the Sundial Bridge Pylon at Turtle Bay Is Redding’s Most Underrated Thrill

Most people who visit Redding make it to the Sundial Bridge. They walk across the translucent glass deck, pause midway to look down at the Sacramento River rushing below, snap a photo or two, and call it done. And honestly, that experience alone is worth the trip — the bridge is legitimately one of the most striking pieces of public architecture in the American West, a Santiago Calatrava original that wouldn’t look out of place in Barcelona or Valencia. But here’s what most visitors never find out: you can climb the pylon.

Not the full 217-foot tower, to be clear — but a guided ascent via the interior staircase that takes you to a viewing platform well above the bridge deck, looking out over the full sweep of the Sacramento River, the rolling oak-studded hills of the Shasta foothills, and on a clear morning, the snow-capped crown of Mount Shasta floating on the northern horizon. It is, without exaggeration, one of the great views in Northern California, and almost nobody knows you can access it.

The experience is offered through Turtle Bay Exploration Park, which manages the bridge and surrounding grounds along the southern end of Redding’s park corridor. Timing matters — pylon access is available on select dates and during special events, so it’s worth calling ahead or checking the Turtle Bay website before you plan your visit. When it is open, the climb itself takes maybe fifteen minutes, but most people linger considerably longer once they reach the top. The light shifts constantly up there, and the perspective on the river below — wide, shallow, glacially blue-green in summer — is one of those views that rewires your sense of scale.

Even if you arrive on a day when the pylon isn’t open for climbing, the bridge and its surroundings reward a slow visit. The north bank trail system connects directly to the Sacramento River Trail, and the Turtle Bay campus on the south side includes well-maintained gardens, shaded picnic areas, and the entrance to the full museum and butterfly house complex. It’s the kind of place that works as a two-hour detour or a full-day anchor for your Redding itinerary.

Parking is free and easy on the north side of the river along Sundial Bridge Drive, just off Highway 44 near the Market Street corridor. Morning visits are reliably the best — the light comes from the east and catches the steel cable array in a way that makes the whole structure look like it’s glowing from within. Bring a camera with a wide lens if you have one, and wear layers; the river breeze at the top of the pylon has a bite to it even in late spring.

Redding has no shortage of outdoor spectacle — the rivers, the volcanic peaks, the lava country to the north and east. But the Sundial Bridge pylon climb is something different: an architectural marvel you can get inside of, a civic landmark that rewards curiosity, and a reminder that this small city in the upper Sacramento Valley has been quietly building something extraordinary. Don’t just walk across it. Go up.
