Kathy Garver Criticizes 2002 ‘Family Affair’ Remake for Lacking Original Warmth

Kathy Garver, who played Cissy in the original Family Affair series, spoke candidly to Fox News Digital about the 2002 remake. She said the reboot “sucked” and failed to capture the chemistry, warmth, and familial bond that defined the beloved 1960s sitcom.

Why the remake missed the mark

Garver explained that the original show, which debuted in 1966, centered on bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith) unexpectedly becoming guardian to his late brother’s three children—Cissy, Buffy, and Jody. The series was praised for its authentic family dynamics and the contrast between Keith’s tough‑exterior, ex‑Marine demeanor and his tender care for the kids.

In the 2002 version, Gary Cole portrayed Bill Davis and Tim Curry took on the butler, Mr. French. While Garver acknowledged both actors’ talent—calling Cole “great in ‘NCIS’”—she felt they brought qualities that didn’t align with audience expectations. “When they see Gary Cole, they say, ‘Well, that’s not Uncle Bill,’” she said, noting that Cole could not match Brian Keith’s unique blend of macho presence and loving father‑figure.

Garver also critiqued Curry’s interpretation of Mr. French, describing it as “loud and boisterous” and more akin to a Tim Curry show than a traditional sitcom. She said Curry’s performance diverged from Sebastian Cabot’s understated, low‑key portrayal, which was rooted in genuine love for the children.

What made the original special

According to Garver, the original cast’s authentic sense of family stemmed from characters who truly cared for one another. She highlighted the show’s pioneering premise—a single uncle caring for three orphaned children—as a groundbreaking concept for its era. The series also benefited from early color filming and a production crew with strong ties to the movie industry, contributing to its “real quality” feel.

Garver emphasized that the original’s relatable storylines and warm character interactions continue to resonate. “People really like each other—what a concept,” she said, noting the calm, listening tone of the show compared to today’s chaotic programming.

Upcoming 60th‑anniversary celebration

Catchy Comedy Network will honor the sitcom’s 60th anniversary with a special marathon on Sunday, Sept. 13. Garver will host the event, sharing memories from her five‑season run as Cissy and highlighting favorite episodes that showcase the series’ enduring appeal.
