East Rutherford, N.J. — The New York Giants hosted veteran running back Najee Harris for a workout on Monday, assessing whether the 28‑year‑old can provide depth after missing nearly a year due to a torn left Achilles tendon.
Harris, who spent the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, appeared in three games before a non‑contact injury against Denver on Sept. 21 ended his season. He previously posted four consecutive 1,000‑yard rushing seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2021‑2024, including 514 yards and two touchdowns in nine games against the Baltimore Ravens.
Coaches weigh the risk and reward
Giants head coach Brian Daboll and offensive staff noted Harris is not yet at full football shape. “He’s not back 100 percent,” Daboll said. “If we move forward, it will be a process, but he brings a lot of experience.”
Running back Dante Miller suffered a groin injury in the preseason opener, prompting the Giants to explore additional options. The team also signed quarterback Jake Haener and linebacker Chandler Martin as part of its roster moves.
Backfield competition remains open
Current Giants backs Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy are expected to shoulder most of the workload, but Harris could serve as a reliable reserve if he regains health. Skattebo, who missed much of his rookie season with a broken right fibula and a dislocated ankle, expressed enthusiasm about meeting Harris. “Najee’s a great player. I’m super excited to get to know him and play with him,” Skattebo said.
Skattebo also acknowledged his own recovery is ongoing. “Touching the ball again after ten months, I feel better each day,” he added, noting lingering bruises but no major setbacks.
Other players on the rise
Wide receiver Malik Nabers, returning from a torn ACL in his right knee, received an increased workload in practice drills on Monday. Nabers, who joined team drills on Thursday, said his spirit feels revived after being away from the game. “My soul has been dead for so long just being away from the game. Just getting out there, having my teammates behind me, I kind of felt that soul come back to life,” he said.
When asked about his readiness for the season opener against Dallas, Nabers deferred to Daboll, who emphasized patience. “We just have to go with the process. I’m praying for it, certainly, but we’ll see,” Daboll said.
What’s next for the Giants?
The Giants have not announced a timeline for any potential signing of Harris. The team will continue evaluating its backfield options throughout training camp, balancing the need for depth with the health status of its current players.
Fans can expect further updates as the Giants finalize their roster ahead of the regular season.
