Georgia Research Alliance Expands with Two New Universities

The Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) has expanded its network by welcoming Georgia Southern University and Kennesaw State University as new members. This addition, announced during the GRA’s quarterly board meeting on May 20, brings the total number of member institutions to ten, including both public and private universities dedicated to advancing research and entrepreneurship in Georgia.

Boosting Research and Economic Growth

Both universities have shown significant progress in funded research, positioning them to potentially achieve the prestigious ‘Research 1’ status under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Sonny Perdue, chancellor of the University System of Georgia and former governor, praised the move, emphasizing its potential to enhance the research profile of Georgia’s university system and stimulate economic growth across the state.

Perdue highlighted the economic benefits, stating that the inclusion of these universities will drive innovation into local companies and create high-wage jobs, benefiting communities statewide. The GRA’s president and CEO, Tim Denning, echoed these sentiments, noting that the expansion strengthens the alliance’s reach and impact across Georgia, not just in major cities like Atlanta or Athens.

State Support and Future Prospects

The State of Georgia’s FY27 budget, signed by Governor Brian Kemp, includes $2 million to establish two new endowed chairs for GRA Eminent Scholars at Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State. These positions aim to attract world-class researchers to the state, further boosting research and development efforts.

Both universities will also gain access to the GRA Core Exchange, a unique program that allows researchers to utilize equipment and facilities across member institutions without incurring external administrative fees. This collaboration is expected to enhance research capabilities and foster partnerships that connect academic discovery with real-world applications.

Kyle Marrero, president of Georgia Southern University, expressed enthusiasm for joining the GRA, aligning the university’s goals with the alliance’s mission to expand Georgia’s research capacity and economic competitiveness. Similarly, Kennesaw State President Kathy Schwaig highlighted the university’s commitment to expanding research capacity and forming partnerships that drive innovation and provide opportunities for students and faculty.

The GRA’s expansion reflects its ongoing mission to position Georgia as a leader in technology and research. Since its founding in 1990, the alliance has contributed over $16 billion to the state’s economy, demonstrating a significant return on investment for Georgia.
