Atlanta’s Park System Ranks 18th Nationally Amid Funding Concerns

Atlanta has achieved a significant milestone by securing the 18th spot in the Trust for Public Land’s annual ParkScore ranking, marking a steady rise from its 51st position in 2016. This achievement highlights the city’s commitment to enhancing park access, with 85% of residents now living within a 10-minute walk of a park, surpassing the national average of 76%.

Funding Challenges

Despite this progress, the city’s proposed 2027 budget includes a five percent reduction in general fund spending for parks, reducing it to $54.6 million. This decision has raised concerns among park advocates who argue that philanthropic contributions and property tax revenue should supplement, not replace, city funding. Michael Halicki, President and CEO of Park Pride, emphasized that such cuts could deter philanthropic support, as donors want assurance that their investments are matched by city efforts.

Areas for Improvement

George Dusenbury, Georgia State Director for the Trust for Public Land, pointed out that while Atlanta excels in park access, there is room for improvement in maintenance, amenities, and park land. He stressed the importance of maintaining existing parks and enhancing amenities like trails, dog parks, and splash pads. Additionally, expanding park land is crucial, as only 8.1% of Atlanta is designated as park space, compared to the national median park size of 5.4 acres.

Nature parks and preserves, such as Lake Charlotte and the Herbert Greene Nature Preserve, offer potential for growth. These larger, less developed areas provide significant mental and physical health benefits and serve as vital environmental resources by filtering pollutants and reducing urban temperatures.

Community Involvement

The city’s rise in ParkScore rankings is attributed to the dedication of its residents, who actively invest time and resources into their local parks. Dusenbury noted that the true value of parks lies in their impact on communities, not just in their rankings. Park advocates like Halicki focus on the ‘lived experience’ of park visitors, emphasizing the importance of maintenance and accessibility over numerical rankings.
