GCISD earns A rating as new trustees take office after May election

Grapevine‑Colleyville Independent School District (GCISD) announced a preliminary A rating for the 2026 Texas Education Agency (TEA) accountability cycle, achieving a composite score of 91. The district’s rating rose five points from the previous year and reflects gains across Student Achievement, Academic Growth, Relative Performance and Closing the Gaps.

Rating details and school performance

According to the TEA release on August 14, Student Achievement increased to 91, Academic Growth to 82, Relative Performance to 82 and Closing the Gaps to 91. Eleven campuses earned A ratings, including Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School. The district also collected 59 distinctions, up from 38 the year before.

Timberline Elementary illustrated a notable turnaround, moving from a score of 68 and a D rating in 2024 to a 76 and a C in 2025, and finally to an 87 and a B in 2026.

Board changes and strategic plan

In May 2026, voters replaced three trustees on the GCISD board. The unofficial election results showed Matthew White defeating AJ Pontillo (52.18% to 47.82%), Lindsey Sheguit defeating Dianna Sager (51.11% to 48.89%) and Darrell Brown defeating Mary Humphrey (51.64% to 48.36%). The new trustees were sworn in on May 18.

Trustee Shannon Braun, who remained on the board, described the rating as evidence of a five‑year strategic plan that began under former superintendent Brad Schnautz. The plan emphasizes i‑Ready diagnostics, daily structured literacy blocks focused on phonics for kindergarten through second grade, and the adoption of HMH English language arts materials.

GCISD implemented i‑Ready reading and math diagnostics for kindergarten through eighth grade in the 2024‑25 school year. In November 2025, the district reported daily 40‑ to 45‑minute phonics‑focused literacy blocks for early grades. Mid‑year reading and math gains reported in March were attributed to teachers, new instructional materials and i‑Ready.

Context of the rating

The TEA’s accountability reports record outcomes but do not assign credit to any individual trustee, board faction or program. Because the new trustees took office near the end of the 2025‑26 school year, the 2026 rating does not reflect a full year under the new board. Nonetheless, district officials highlighted the rating as a validation of long‑term planning and high expectations.

Local advocacy group United to Protect GCISD campaigned for the 2026 challengers, arguing that the election would return board control to all district stakeholders. The group’s April campaign post warned that the incumbent board president, Braun, could be removed.

Community response

Superintendent Jason Adams praised the achievement, noting the role of students, teachers, staff and parents. He emphasized that the district’s progress aligns with the strategic plan’s focus on data‑driven instruction and literacy fundamentals.

Parents and community members have expressed optimism that the continued emphasis on structured literacy and diagnostic tools will sustain the district’s upward trajectory. The rating also provides a benchmark for neighboring districts as they consider similar instructional reforms.

GCISD’s next steps include completing the five‑year strategic plan, monitoring student outcomes, and preparing for the upcoming full‑year evaluation under the new board’s leadership.
