The city of Garland is warning residents not to throw batteries in the trash or recycling. Discarded batteries can cause fires in waste facilities and collection trucks when they are crushed or punctured, leading to short-circuits, overheating, and ignition of nearby materials.

Proper Disposal

Residents can bring batteries to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, located at 11234 Plano Rd., for safe and proper disposal. The city also reminds residents that liquids like paints, fertilizers, chemicals, mercury, automotive fluids, and other hazardous materials are not allowed in trash and recycling carts.
