Garland Voters Approve Proposition A, Keeping Property Tax Rate Low and Funding Public Safety

Garland residents voted on November 3 to keep the city’s property‑tax rate at $0.6799 per $100 of taxable value, a slight reduction from last year’s $0.6897. Unofficial results show 51% of voters approved Proposition A, the measure that authorizes the budget for the next fiscal year.

What the approved rate means for services

The approved rate funds the hiring of ten new police officers, nine firefighters, eight 9‑1‑1 dispatchers and three Animal Services Technicians. It also safeguards funding for Garland’s public libraries, park maintenance and security, and the community events that give the city its close‑knit feel.

Mayor Hedrick’s response

Mayor Dylan Hedrick thanked voters for their confidence, noting that the result reflects the community’s desire for prudent spending and strong public‑safety resources. “Your decision gives us the people and resources to keep that progress going,” he wrote, adding that the city will report back as positions are filled and investments take shape.

Strategic context

The vote aligns with “Garland on the Rise,” the city’s 2026‑2036 Strategic Plan, which aims for a financially resilient, economically vibrant community that can compete across North Texas. By maintaining a lower tax rate while expanding essential services, the city hopes to attract businesses and families seeking a safe, well‑served environment.

Community involvement

Mayor Hedrick highlighted the high level of citizen engagement throughout the campaign. Town‑hall meetings saw residents ask thoughtful questions, learn the facts and ultimately voice their preferences at the ballot box. This level of participation, he said, is what makes Garland strong and ensures that budget decisions reflect the values of its families.

Next steps

With the measure approved, City Council, staff and residents will move forward on hiring and resource allocation. The city plans to fill the new public‑safety positions over the coming months and to continue investing in park upgrades, library programs and community events that foster a sense of belonging.

Looking ahead

Garland’s leadership emphasizes that the tax‑rate decision is just one piece of a broader effort to sustain growth and quality of life. By keeping taxes modest while expanding critical services, the city hopes to set a model for responsible governance that other North Texas municipalities can follow.
