Fundraising push aims to finish Fred Rouse memorial in Fort Worth

Fort Worth – Organizers of the Fred Rouse Memorial are launching a final fundraising drive to close a $2.1 million budget gap. The nonprofit Tarrant County Coalition for Peace and Justice, which has led the project since the summer, says at least $700,000 more is needed to finish construction of the park at 1000 NE 12th St.

Project status and timeline

Mayor‑appointed president Fred Rouse III explained that major elements of the memorial are already in place, including the walking path built with pavers and large steel panels that represent the “death tree” from which his grandfather was hanged. Remaining work includes irrigation, vegetation, a fence, and a mural. The coalition hopes to raise the remaining funds by the end of September so the site can open later this year, just before the Dec. 11, 2026, anniversary of the 105th year since Fred Rouse was lynched.

Why the cost has risen

Rouse said construction delays and rising material costs have nearly doubled the original $1.16 million estimate reported in 2023. A major donor recently withdrew support, pushing the budget higher. The coalition continues to host community events and solicit contributions from residents and local businesses.

Historical context

Fred Rouse was attacked by a white mob of striking meat‑packing workers on Dec. 11, 1921, after being hired as a non‑union laborer during a period when Black workers were barred from Texas trade unions. After surviving the initial assault, he was abducted from a hospital and hanged at the corner of NE 12th St. and Samuels Ave. A marker honoring him was placed at the Maddox‑Muse Center in December 2021, and a grant from the Rainwater Charitable Foundation helped the coalition acquire the land for the memorial.

How to help

Donors can contribute through the coalition’s website, where additional information about giving is provided. Community members are encouraged to attend upcoming events and spread the word about the need for support.
