Rockies rookie Cole Carrigg benched after making obscene gesture to Braves fans

Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg faced disciplinary action after an incident at Truist Park on Saturday. While the Rockies were holding a 1‑0 lead, Carrigg dove for a fly ball hit by Michael Harris II but missed, allowing the ball to turn into a two‑run double that gave the Atlanta Braves the lead.

Frustrated by the Braves’ reaction in the stands, Carrigg responded by flipping the bird toward the crowd. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer publicly condemned the gesture, stating that such behavior “is an embarrassment to the organization and we don’t stand for that here.” Schaeffer announced that Carrigg would be omitted from the starting lineup for the next two games.

Apology and return

Following the incident, Carrigg issued a sincere apology, saying, “First, I apologize to my teammates and the organization, that’s not how I want to represent us. It’s inexcusable on my part.” He emphasized his commitment to playing at “110 percent” and expressed respect for the passion of Braves fans, adding, “That gesture can’t happen.”

Despite being held out of the Sunday starter’s role, Carrigg rejoined the team as a pinch‑hitter in the series finale. He went 0‑for‑2 with a strikeout, then stayed in the game at center field and shortstop.

The incident serves as a reminder that professional athletes are held to high standards of conduct, both on and off the field. Carrigg’s willingness to own his mistake and accept the team’s disciplinary measures reflects a learning moment for the young player and the organization.
