Fargo – The Friends of the Fargo Public Library announced Wednesday, Oct. 21, that it has exceeded its fundraising target, gathering $101,000 for the Dr. James Carlson Library renovation project. The nonprofit group, which supports Fargo’s library system, set a $100,000 goal earlier this summer and now reports a modest surplus.
Key donations and ongoing campaign
Among the contributions, a $50,000 donation from local retailer Scheels stood out, while the Friends themselves pledged an additional $25,000. The fundraising drive began in mid‑July and runs through the end of October, but the organization says donors may continue to give after the campaign closes.
“It definitely feels like something that needs to be celebrated,” said Marisa Nygord, volunteer board president of the Friends. She added that talks are already underway with a few potential donors who have expressed interest in making larger gifts.
Library impact and community use
Opened in 2007 at 2801 32nd Ave. S., the Carlson Library is one of three public libraries serving Fargo’s estimated 136,000‑plus residents. According to Fargo Public Library Director Tim Dirks, the branch welcomed 160,000 visitors last year, a testament to its popularity and the dedication of its staff.
“The library is beloved because of the staff and location,” Dirks said. “You put those two together and folks are going to show up.”
Renovation plans
The $101,000 raised will go toward $319,000 worth of updates, including interior paint, a new service desk, a self‑checkout station, additional shelf space, and refreshed children’s and teen areas. The library will work with JLG Architects to begin construction, marking the first major renovation of the Carlson branch since its opening.
Importantly, no taxpayer money will be used for the project. Remaining costs will be covered by further donations and endowment earnings, Dirks emphasized.
Community gratitude
Both Nygord and Dirks expressed deep appreciation for the community’s generosity. “This support is absolutely essential to get that project off the ground,” Dirks said, thanking the Friends for their successful effort.
Nygord noted that the funds will “make real change” for a library that serves people of all ages. “It is a testament to libraries overall. They’re available for every community member,” she added.
How to contribute
Donations can be made online at friendsfpl.org/give, with donors asked to label contributions for the Carlson Renovation Fund. Checks may be mailed to the Friends of the Fargo Public Library, P.O. Box 1365, Fargo, ND 58107, with “Carlson Renovation” noted in the memo line.
The Friends of the Fargo Public Library will continue to seek support as the renovation moves forward, ensuring the Carlson Library remains a vibrant hub for learning, recreation and community connection.
