Fresno Nears Completion of New Public Transparency Portal

The City of Fresno is making strides towards fulfilling its promise to enhance transparency in local governance. Following a unanimous vote by the Fresno City Council in January, efforts are underway to establish the city’s first public transparency portal. This initiative aims to make city contracts, ordinances, and council minutes easily accessible to the public.

Progress on the Transparency Portal

Currently in its beta testing phase, the portal allows users to search for city contracts and agreements by company name, as well as access city ordinances and council minutes. Interim City Clerk Amy Aller is leading the project, which has involved compiling tens of thousands of documents from various city systems. Aller emphasized the collaborative effort with the city’s Information Services Department to reach this stage.

Aller noted that while the portal is not yet complete, it is close to being a functional tool for public use. She highlighted the importance of ongoing feedback to refine and improve the portal’s features. The current version already provides salary information for top city officials, although data beyond 2021 is still being integrated.

Commitment to Comprehensive Transparency

City leaders have drawn inspiration from the City of San Diego’s transparency model, which offers a comprehensive and user-friendly display of city contracts. Councilmember Miguel Arias, who sponsored the transparency reforms, expressed a desire for Fresno’s portal to match San Diego’s level of detail, including listing all no-bid contracts regardless of value.

Arias is considering further resolutions to expand the scope of the portal and ensure it includes all relevant contract information. He also aims to streamline the process for making improvements to the portal without requiring constant council approval.

As Fresno moves closer to launching this transparency portal, city officials remain committed to providing the public with easy access to important city information, reinforcing their dedication to open and accountable governance.
