Fresno, Calif. — Certified flight instructor Danna Eady, 41, was killed Saturday afternoon when the aircraft she was piloting crashed just off the runway at Sierra Sky Park Airport. The tragedy also claimed the lives of her two youngest sons, while her husband Craig Eady survived with third-degree burns.
Details of the crash
According to Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti, emergency responders first focused on locating any survivors. “Two adults, a man and a woman, were found outside the plane with severe injuries,” Botti said. He later added that two additional victims were discovered in the wreckage and identified as children.
Sierra Sky Park Airport has a runway just over 2,400 feet long, making it one of the shortest in the San Joaquin Valley. Because the airport is privately owned, it is not required to meet Federal Aviation Administration safety standards for runway overruns, a factor highlighted by longtime friend and fellow instructor Nick Wilcox.
Community response
Wilcox described Eady as an adventurous, outgoing person who loved flying. “She died doing what she loved,” he said, adding that she was likely “on another adventure” now. Colleagues remembered her as a veteran flight instructor who mentored countless aspiring pilots and flight‑science students at Reedley College.
Friends and family have launched a support campaign to help cover funeral and other expenses for the Eady family. The Reedley College flight science department cancelled classes for Tuesday following the Labor Day holiday in respect for the loss.
Safety concerns at Sierra Sky Park
Wilcox noted that the airport is particularly challenging when an aircraft experiences a problem, citing the short runway and lack of mandatory FAA safety requirements as contributing factors. The incident underscores the risks faced by pilots operating from small, privately owned fields.
The Fresno aviation community is mourning the loss of a dedicated mentor and a beloved family member. Local authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
