French AI Firm Mistral Defends Military Use Amid Papal Criticism

The debate over artificial intelligence’s role in military applications has taken a new turn as Mistral, a French AI startup, defends its use in defense systems. This comes in response to recent criticisms from Pope Leo, who has urged for international regulation to limit AI’s development, particularly in warfare.

Pope’s Concerns and Mistral’s Response

Pope Leo issued a document earlier this week, expressing concerns that AI systems could spread misinformation and perpetuate conflict. He specifically criticized their use in military contexts. In response, Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral, emphasized the necessity for Europe to maintain its defense capabilities, especially as global adversaries increasingly deploy AI technologies.

“We’re all for peace, but if you look at our rivals and adversaries in the world, they’re using artificial intelligence,” Mensch stated. He argued that as long as threats exist, Europe must develop its own AI capabilities to ensure security.

Expansion Plans Amid Local Opposition

Amidst this debate, Mistral announced plans to open a new data center in Les Ulis, France, by the third quarter of 2026. This facility will add 10 megawatts of computing power to the company’s infrastructure. This is part of a broader €4 billion investment strategy to achieve 200 megawatts of computing power by the end of 2027, with additional centers planned in Sweden and France.

However, these data center projects face local opposition, reflecting a broader global trend of resistance to such developments. Concerns often revolve around environmental impact and resource allocation.

Public Perception and Future Outlook

Public sentiment towards AI remains mixed, as evidenced by recent incidents in the United States where students booed executives discussing AI at graduation ceremonies. Mensch acknowledged the anxiety surrounding AI’s transformative impact on the workforce, stating, “It’s not the first time that people are a bit anguished at something coming up. But we’ll be fine. We’ll find a way to use it efficiently.”

As the conversation around AI’s role in society continues, Mistral’s stance highlights the tension between technological advancement and ethical considerations, particularly in the realm of national defense.
