In celebration of National Eye Exam Month, Santa Maria residents gathered at Centerpointe Parkway on August 20 to receive free eye examinations and prescription eyewear. The 40‑foot VSP Eyes of Hope mobile clinic, operated in partnership with SEE International and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, provided the services from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Local Impact
Approximately one hundred community members took advantage of the opportunity, many of whom cited cost as a barrier to routine vision care. Event organizers noted that nearly one in ten adults in the area avoided healthcare in the past year primarily because of expense. For individuals experiencing homelessness, the lack of vision care can exacerbate challenges related to education, employment, and overall quality of life.
How the Program Works
Qualifying residents received a comprehensive eye exam performed by volunteer optometrists, followed by a pair of prescription glasses at no charge. The mobile clinic is designed to travel to underserved locations; after its Santa Maria stop, it will be set up at the Lompoc Health Center on North R Street the following day, offering the same hours and services.
Long‑Term Commitment
VSP Eyes of Hope has partnered with eye doctors and local communities for more than two decades, delivering vision care to nearly five million people nationwide. The program’s goal is to reduce barriers to eye health, recognizing that clear vision is essential for learning, safe driving, and productive work.
Community Voices
Volunteers emphasized that regular vision care supports not only individual health but also broader community well‑being. “When people can see clearly, they are better equipped to succeed in school, keep a job, and engage fully in family life,” one optometrist said. Local officials praised the collaboration, highlighting the county’s commitment to addressing health disparities.
Looking Ahead
The mobile clinic model allows the partnership to reach additional neighborhoods throughout Santa Barbara County. Residents interested in future visits are encouraged to follow announcements from the county health department and VSP Vision.
