Free Veteran Suicide Awareness Walk and Yoga Event at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park

El Paso, TX – As part of September’s Suicide Awareness Month, local nonprofit WE HIKE Adventure is returning for its second year with a free, two‑part community series aimed at veterans. The events will take place at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park and are titled “WE HIKE for Veterans: Awareness, Connection & Prevention.”

Event Details

The first portion of the series is a guided hike on the park’s scenic trails. Participants will walk together, sharing stories and building camaraderie in a supportive outdoor setting. The hike is open to all veterans, active‑duty service members, and their families, with no registration fee required.

Following the hike, the program expands to include “Unlace and Unwind,” a post‑walk yoga session led by a military veteran who has completed trauma‑informed training through Warriors at Ease. The yoga class is designed to help participants release tension, practice mindfulness, and develop coping tools that can aid in suicide prevention.

Why It Matters

Suicide remains a leading cause of death among veterans, and community‑based initiatives like this provide critical opportunities for connection and early intervention. By combining physical activity with mental‑health‑focused yoga, WE HIKE Adventure addresses both the body and the mind, reflecting a holistic approach to wellness that aligns with the values of families and faith‑based communities in El Paso.

“Our goal is to create a safe space where veterans can come together, share their experiences, and find hope,” said a spokesperson for WE HIKE Adventure. “The addition of yoga, taught by a fellow veteran, adds a therapeutic element that many participants have found beneficial for managing stress and trauma.”

How to Participate

Anyone interested in attending should arrive at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park on the scheduled dates, which will be announced on the organization’s website and social‑media channels. No prior experience with hiking or yoga is necessary, and participants are encouraged to bring water, comfortable shoes, and an open heart.

Local businesses and faith groups have expressed support for the initiative, noting its alignment with community values of service, family, and personal liberty. The event also offers an opportunity for volunteers to get involved, whether by assisting with logistics, providing refreshments, or simply offering a listening ear.

Looking Ahead

WE HIKE Adventure plans to continue expanding its outreach, with future events that may include additional wellness workshops, peer‑support groups, and collaborations with local health providers. The organization hopes that by fostering ongoing dialogue and connection, it can make a lasting impact on veteran mental health in the region.

For more information, visit the WE HIKE Adventure website or follow their social‑media pages for updates on dates, times, and any special accommodations.
